STS-49 Mission Specialist (MS) Thomas Akers smiles for the camera on the middeck Endeavour, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 105. This Electronic Still Camera (ESC) image was taken as part of Development Test Objective (DTO) 648, Electonic Still Photography Test (with downlink). Electronic Still Photography is a new technology which provides the means for a handheld camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality. DTO 648 will determine camera response to the photographic collections encountered onorbit using a variety of lenses and camera settings.
