The Apollo 16 astronauts leave the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building at the start of their participation in the ""dry"" or unfueled portion of the space vehicle countdown demonstration test conducted today at Launch Complex 39A. Entering the van first is lunar module pilot Charles M. Duke, Jr., followed by command module pilot Thomas K. Mattingly II and mission commander John W. Young. The van transported them approximately 13 kilometers [8 miles] to the Apollo/Saturn V space vehicle that will launch them to the Moon no earlier than April 16, 1972.
