Apollo 16 mission commander John W. Young deploys a lunar portable magnetometer [LPM] during training exercises at the Kennedy Space Center. The LPM is carried to different locations to make specific measurements in real time. The stationary lunar surface magnetometer experiment, contained in the Apollo lunar surface experiment package, is stationary and transmits lunar magnetic filed data to Earth on a delayed basis. Young, Thomas K. Mattingly II and Charles M. Duke, Jr., will be launched to the moon no earlier than April 16, 1972.
