Expedition 68 Flight Engineer Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) displays incubated nutrient packets removed from the Space Automated Bioproducts Laboratory (SABL). The packets contain generically activated microbes, like yeast, that are hydrated with sterilized water, incubated inside the SABL, then frozen and returned to Earth for analysis. The BioNutrients experiment is demonstrating a technology that enables on-demand production of human nutrients during long-duration space missions.
